The mission of Teach Plus is to support the retention of high quality teachers into a second stage of their careers by expanding leadership opportunities and financial incentives for those who demonstrate success in the classroom. It is founded on the premise that teachers want to learn and grow in the profession, and want to ensure that their development results in increased learning among their students.

Celine Coggins is the founder and CEO of Teach Plus. She has a background that includes research, policy and K-12 teaching. Prior to founding Teach Plus, Celine worked at the Rennie Center for Education Research and Policy where she led the research and publication process for almost two dozen reports and policy briefs; she is an editor of two books. Celine also led several consulting projects with large urban districts seeking to differentiate roles and pay for teachers. She directs the Teaching Fellows program, which trains exceptional early-career teachers to become advocates for their generation in the profession.

Celine earned her Ph.D. in Education Policy Analysis at Stanford University, where she studied teacher quality and education leadership. At Stanford, Celine conducted research on instructional coaches and their impact on teacher practice through the Center for Research on the Context of Teaching. She also served as a consultant to a national, blue-ribbon panel aimed at improving teacher quality called The Teaching Commission.

Prior to Stanford, Celine worked in the Office of the Commissioner at the Massachusetts Department of Education on an array of teacher quality initiatives. She began her career as a middle school teacher in Worcester, MA. Celine earned her B.A. in Psychology from the College of the Holy Cross and her M.Ed. in Educational Research, Measurement and Evaluation from Boston College.

Monique brings experience as a social entrepreneur, management and human capitol consultant and  reform oriented district administrator to the Teach Plus team.  Monique was the co-founder, President and Chief Curriculum Officer of what FastCompany Magazine has called “one of the top ten companies changing the world,” New Leaders for New Schools. Her primary focus there was development, management and delivery of a world class training curriculum that focuses on giving new principals concrete skills in instructional and managerial leadership.

Monique started her business career in marketing and operations as an Assistant Brand Manager for the Quaker Oats Company.  She moved into education reform with the McKenzie Group in Washington, DC and hired, trained and evaluated the teachers for four newly opened model middle schools for DCPS.  She spent a year as the assistant principal of one of those schools. Monique then worked as Special Assistant to the Superintendent of the Philadelphia Public School District which informed her understanding of the need for quality training of urban school teachers and leaders.

While working on her doctorate at Harvard Graduate School of Education, Monique was a leadership coach and consultant for fourteen charter school in Massachusetts. She has spent the last four years using the sum of her experience to consult in the area of management, operations and training for organizations that want to ensure they are providing the highest quality learning experience for their students. Monique earned her Bachelor's Degree from Dartmouth College, her MBA from Harvard Business School, and her Masters in Education from Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is ABD for her doctorate in Education Administration and Social Policy.

Heather has spent her career committed to transforming education in the United States, especially for low-income and minority students. Previously, Heather served as the Director of Teacher Quality at the Education Trust, a national non-profit organization dedicated to raising standards and closing achievement gaps in education. At Education Trust, Heather managed research, data and policy analysis; wrote nationally-released reports on teachers; conducted presentations across the country; and developed federal and state policy to ensure access to effective teachers.

Heather earned her master's degree and doctorate from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. There, she was a founding member of the "Project on the Next Generation of Teachers," a research collaboration devoted to studying new teachers. Heather is a co-author of the award-winning book, Finders and Keepers: Helping New Teachers Survive and Thrive in Our Schools, as well as reports and articles on alternative certification programs, new teachers' experiences and conceptions of career. She has also worked as a School Director at Teach for America's Summer Institute, managing the preparation of several hundred new teachers. Heather launched her career in education as an elementary teacher and Teach for America corps member in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Heather graduated from Kenyon College with magna cum laude honors, earning a bachelor's degree in religion and South Asian studies.

Michelle Boyers Board Chair

Michelle became the Board Chair of Teach Plus after spending a year leading business development and strategic planning. She most recently worked as the Director of the Office of Human Resources in the Boston Public Schools. Prior to joining BPS, Ms. Boyers worked for the New York City public school system as Director of Strategic Partnerships. As a founding team member of the Office of Strategic Partnerships, she helped to build the infrastructure to significantly increase private sector support for NYC public schools by raising private funding for district reform efforts and creating partnerships to bring additional resources to individual schools.

Previously, Ms. Boyers was a Partner at New Profit Inc., a nonprofit venture philanthropy fund that provides growth capital and strategic consulting support to education entrepreneurs. She also worked in finance as a private equity investment associate at Electra Fleming Inc. and an investment banking analyst at Chemical Securities and Kidder Peabody. Ms. Boyers has a Bachelor's Degree from Ohio Wesleyan University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Tamala has devoted fourteen years of enthusiastic work in urban schools as a teacher, assistant principal, and most recently middle school principal. As a classroom teacher, Tamala developed a passion for new teachers quickly realizing the need for supporting new teachers in an effort to retain them in urban education. This passion led to her creating a district recognized new teacher support program while serving as Assistant Principal at White Station High School (Memphis, TN) from 2003-2006. In April 2006, Tamala was appointed Principal of Wooddale Middle School to begin the 2007-2008 school year. Having served for four years, Tamala’s effective instructional leadership focused on team-building, new teacher support, and data-driven decision making moved this urban school from an NCLB status of Target to Good Standing. Most recently, Tamala was recognized by the TN Association of Middle Schools as the 2010 West TN Administrator of the Year.

Tamala’s leadership training for urban education is attributed to her participation in The Memphis Leadership Fellows Program (2005-2006). Additionally, she is an April 2006 Fellow of The Leadership Academy, a highly respected program that gives emerging leaders the tools, experiences and exposure needed to drive community change in Memphis.

Tamala earned a BA in English from Tougaloo College and a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Jackson State University. She is currently pursuing her doctorate degree in Instruction Curriculum and Leadership from the University of Memphis where she is ABD.

Maria Fenwick Director, Boston, MA

Maria Fenwick is the Teach Plus Boston Director as well as a part-time fourth grade teacher at the Mason Pilot Elementary School in the Boston Public Schools. Maria was a member of the first cohort of Teaching Policy Fellows in Boston. During her Fellowship, she focused on her interest in empowering teachers to lead turnaround efforts for underperforming schools. She has been an invited panelist and speaker for the National Staff Development Council Summer Conference, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Measures of Effective Teaching teacher panel, and the National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality. Maria also founded and led the Boston Teacher Action Network with the Boston Plan for Excellence.

Prior to teaching, Maria earned a B.A. summa cum laude from Colby College and an Ed.M. in education policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her path to teaching was through the Boston Teacher Residency. She is currently a fifth year teacher and is active on her school’s Data Leadership Team.

Before joining Teach Plus to lead the T3 Initiative, Meghan was the Project Director for School Turnaround Strategies at Mass Insight, where she provided overall project management and partner development for programs in Mass Insight’s school turnaround focus area. Prior to Mass Insight, she held positions as the Director of Strategic Planning and the Director of Operations in the New York City Department of Education’s Student Enrollment office, and taught second grade for several years. She earned an MBA from the Yale School of Management, a BA from Boston College, and a M.Ed. from Lesley College as part of the Lesley-Shady Hill School Teacher Training Program.

Casey brings a strong connection to and knowledge of teachers through her extensive background in teaching and education labor management. Most recently Casey served as a UniServ Director for the Indiana State Teachers Association serving Indianapolis Public Schools. Prior to her assignment in IPS, she served other urban, suburban, and rural school corporations in the same capacity. She built a strong reputation as a leader who was able to build bridges between teachers and administration. Her passion for helping teachers with support and experience proved to be an invaluable tool while at the same time working co-operatively with education leaders to provide a better quality of education. In her UniServ position, Casey also worked with legislators and other policy makers on important issues involving education including school funding and the impact of Reductions in Force.

Prior to this work, Casey taught sixth and seventh grade math and science for eleven years and spent one year as an eighth grade school counselor. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Franklin College and her Master’s Degree in School Counseling from Indiana University.

Nathan has a background as a social entrepreneur, development professional, and finance and operations consultant. Nathan comes to Teach Plus from the private sector, where he was an economic consultant at Analysis Group in Boston. Prior to economic consulting, Nathan consulted on corporate development strategies for Unis-Cité, a national service organization in Paris, France. While earning his MBA at Boston College, Nathan conducted research on corporate volunteering and philanthropy at the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship.

Prior to receiving his MBA, Nathan managed City Year’s national corporate partnerships with Timberland, Bank of America, and CSX. Nathan developed and grew Care Force, a revenue-generating community service model at City Year, to earning over $1 million annually. He served as an AmeriCorps VISTA in Boston developing a Boston-based revenue-generating program at City Year.

Nathan has also spent time as a teacher in an urban classroom and working for after school organizations such as Citizen Schools and BELL. Nathan received his BA from the University of Kansas and his MBA from Boston College. He serves as an officer on the board of two Boston-area nonprofit organizations. Nathan is currently an adjunct professor teaching nonprofit management at the Carroll Graduate School of Management at Boston College.

Julie brings a dedication to urban education reform and to ensuring that every student has access to effective, transformative teachers. Prior to joining the Teach Plus team, Julie worked with The Steppingstone Academy to prepare urban schoolchildren for educational opportunities that lead to college. As an Admission Associate and Academic Advisor at Steppingstone Julie managed the recruitment and selection of participants and supported the academic success of a cohort of low-income and majority first generation college-going students.

Previously, Julie served as an AmeriCorps volunteer implementing literacy and social justice programming to affect lasting positive change at an elementary school in Roslindale, MA. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Spanish from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master’s degree in Education Policy and Management from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Amy has supported students in Chicago Public Schools for 14 years through classroom teaching, collaborating with teachers and most recently coaching beginning teachers. Her work centered around training and supporting beginning teacher coaches with the Chicago New Teacher Center.

Amy earned her National Board Certification through the Quest Center’s Nurturing Teacher Leadership program and has also worked as a facilitator for the program. Amy has advocated for induction and teacher support at the House of Representatives and at the Education Commission of the States Convention. In addition to this, Amy has served at the Center for Teaching Quality where she helped to research and write a detailed report on pay for performance for teachers.

Prior to teaching, Amy earned a BA in from Hampton University and a MA in Elementary Education from DePaul University. Amy has recently finished a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Concordia University.

Ky is the Policy and Operations Associate with Teach Plus. Prior to working with Teach Plus and the T3 Initiative Ky was Operations Manager for a start-up musician management company, handling tour logistics on the local, national, and international levels. Ky holds and Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Bates College in Maine.
