Mike Stryer leads the organization’s policy and teacher leadership work in California. He works with teacher leaders in Los Angeles and across California through Teach Plus’ statewide and local policy fellowships, as well as through its teacher-led professional learning.
From 2003-2011, Mike taught social studies at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles where he focused on expanding student access to AP-level courses, including AP World History. At Fairfax, he served as the school's Lead Teacher and as the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) chapter chair (building rep). Seeking to expand participation of early career teachers in the teacher union, Mike co-founded NewTLA, a caucus within UTLA.
Before teaching, Mike worked in international business, heading international divisions of several U.S. consumer products companies, including Applause and Variflex. He holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science from Stanford University , a master's degree in International Relations from Yale University, and a master's degree in Education from Pepperdine University. Mike joined Teach Plus in 2013.
