You may have seen our Change Agents on the local news or at a recent Rotary Club Meeting. You may have also heard our Policy Fellows preview the advocacy campaigns they’re currently launching. In the coming weeks, our teacher leaders will meet in Jackson to meet with state policymakers. We will also mark the beginning of “Crootin’ Season”, our recruitment and selection process for our 2022-23 Policy Fellowship. Teach Plus Mississippi Celebrates Black History MonthThroughout Black History Month, Teach Plus and Teach Plus MS have used social media to share reflections from Black educators on how they empower students; how and why being a Black educator is fulfilling and joyful; and the ways in which Black educators benefit all students. One of the teachers featured during the campaign was Evonie Rash, a 2022-23 Teach Plus MS Policy Fellow and High School ELA Teacher in Hollandale. Mississippi Program UpdatesOur Policy Fellows were joined by Camille Young, Jackson Director of Cornerstone Capital Partners. She shared her experience as a lobbyist in our State Capitol and shared advice for effectively engaging with legislators. The Fellows also participated in a Welcome Table discussion, facilitated by April Grayson and Jennifer Health from the Alluvial Collective. The teacher leaders used this opportunity to sharpen their storytelling and community-building skills, especially when it comes to discussing race and equity in the context of our policy advocacy work. Mississippi Education Leadership Coach Lauren Huddleston was the guest speaker at the Clarksdale Rotary Club Meeting on Tuesday, February 21st. She told the members about the Delta Change Agent Network, and shared information about the projects that are being developed in several school districts in the Delta. Lauren was also joined by Kambria Jones, a Change Agent and West Tallahatchie High School teacher who is working to increase literacy in mathematics courses. Meet Our 2022-23 Policy FellowsKristin Scott, Holmes County Consolidated School District Kristin Scott is the 4th-5th grade ELA Instructional Coach at William Dean, Jr. Elementary School in Lexington, MS. She has previously taught high school English at Northwest Rankin High School in Flowood. Kristin was named Terry High School’s Teacher of the Year (2014); Crystal Springs High School Teacher of the Month (September 2016 and March 2018). Kristin is a National Board Certified Teacher. Kristin earned her BA in English Education from Mississippi College and her MS in Secondary Education from Jackson State University. Vickie Malone, MS School for the Arts Vickie Malone is a high school social studies instructor at the Mississippi School of the Arts in Brookhaven. Vickie teaches U.S. history, U.S. government, Economics, and Dual Enrollment College Psychology and serves as the Diversity Club Faculty Advisor and the Student Government Faculty Advisor. She also served as the History department chair at McComb High School and was a member of the district Civil Rights Curriculum development leadership team, where she developed an oral history class for seniors. Vickie has been named the Mississippi School of the Arts Teacher of the Year (2021-22), Teacher of the Year for McComb High School (2015-16), and Star Teacher at Cathedral High School (2002-2003). She earned her BA in Theology from Spring Hill College and her MEd in Psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi. Teacher VoicesWLBT (Jackson, MS) visited two of our SEL Change Agents at Johnson Elementary School. Bre’Ana Marshall and Barquita Stanton created JES C.A.R.E.S., a program that teaches 3rd graders how to understand and express their emotions. The SEL Change Agent Program also includes Kanesha Patterson (Van Winkle Elementary School) and Rebecca Menard (Murrah High School)…. Tomorrow (March 1st) will mark the official opening of the application process for the 2023-24 Policy Fellowship. Our 4th cohort of Policy Fellows will consist of 20 teachers looking to deepen their knowledge of education policy and amplify the voices of teacher leaders in the Magnolia State. Fellows will work to influence local and state-level policy decisions and will receive a $1,500 stipend for their commitment.
