September 22, 2021

Las Vegas, NV—Teach Plus congratulates Deanne Moyle-Hicks, a 4th grade teacher from Natchez Elementary School, located on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation, and a 2020-21 Teach Plus Nevada Senior Policy Fellow on being named the 2022 Nevada Teacher of the Year by Governor Steve Sisolak and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jhone Ebert. Throughout her career, Deanne has been an exemplary educator both in- and outside of the classroom. Having taught every K-6 grade level, she has also served as a literacy coach and coached high school volleyball. A National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) in Literacy: Reading-Language Arts, Deanne has collaborated with the Nevada Regional Professional Development Programs to design and implement a statewide, collaborative leadership book study. Deanne has worked with students and families in northern Nevada and with teaching colleagues throughout the state for nearly three decades.

“Deanne is passionately committed to teaching and leading; sharing her personal, lived, and education experiences to encourage and empower her students. A highly respected Teach Plus Nevada Senior Policy Fellow and NBCT colleague, she leads as an effective and reflective practitioner, always seeking to bridge policy and practice in ways that are meaningful for educators and for our profession,” said Dr. Tonia Holmes-Sutton, Teach Plus Nevada Executive Director.

“Deanne is an exemplary teacher who is deeply committed to supporting her students in reaching their aspirations, while also speaking out on behalf of all students across Nevada. She is a model of a true teacher leader— brilliant, dedicated, and leading towards a more equitable system for all students,” said Teach Plus Interim CEO Lindsay Sobel.

As a Teach Plus Policy Fellow, Deanne was a member of the Teach Plus Nevada advocacy group which partnered with the Teachers and Leaders Council to support legislation that positively impacted the Nevada Educator Performance Framework (NEPF) during the 2019 legislative session. She also engaged in advocacy on restorative justice, English language learner rights, teacher and school leadership, district and state exit surveys, and the use of Elementary and Secondary Schools Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds during the recent 2021 legislative session. Additionally, Deanne collaborated with colleagues to institute one of the first Title I pre-K programs in northeastern Nevada.
