John Murphy is a 2018-19 Teach Plus Illinois Change Agent Teacher Leader. John teaches AP Literature, AP Language, and Dual Credit History at Perspectives Calumet, where he also coaches football and weight training. Before Perspectives, John was a founding teacher, football coach, and chaired the English Department at Noble Hansberry, where he won teacher of the year twice. He began his teaching career with Teach for America’s Mississippi Delta corps working at Cross County High School in Cherry Valley, AR. John wrote the Secondary ELA curriculum for Teach for America’s national summer institute program, used by students nationwide, and has worked at seven national institutes as a school leader, facilitator, and coach. He graduated from Tulane University with both a BA and MA in history.
