Azhalia Leal is a 2023-2024 Teach Plus Texas Policy Fellow. Azhalia teaches algebra 1 and physics at Hector P. Garcia Middle School in Dallas, Texas. Born in Monterrey, Mexico, Ms. Leal is a champion of social advancement causes relating to young undocumented Americans, public school students, survivors of gun violence, and digital civic engagement. Having worked in the Texas Legislature and several community-based nonprofit organizations, Azhalia is deeply rooted in community work fueled by the conviction that communities belong to those who live and play in them. As a young undocumented American and a Teach for America alumna, Azhalia has flourished alongside a tight-knit community of brilliant students that are a reflection of her roots and values. Azhalia graduated from the University of North Texas at Dallas.
