As Chief Strategy and Operations Officer at Teach Plus, Alison Avera provides strategic and programmatic guidance across the Teach Plus regions, and oversees the organization’s financial and operating systems. As a key member of Teach Plus’ leadership team, Ali sets the organization’s strategic and programmatic priorities and develops the structures to guide the organization’s future growth and impact.
Prior to joining Teach Plus in 2018, Ali served as Chief Operating Officer of Turnaround for Children, managing strategic planning, programs, and internal operations. She previously worked as Strategic Advisor to the Newark Public Schools Superintendent aiding reform priorities including portfolio design, high school choice, and principal autonomy. Ali was a member of the NYC Department of Education during Joel Klein’s tenure as Chancellor, managing district initiatives, including the oversight of $2.4 billion in Recovery Act Funding and the citywide conversion from geographic districts to a school support structure based on autonomy and accountability. She began her education career in New Orleans as a TFA Corps Member teaching biology and life science. Ali graduated from Tulane University with a BA in history. She earned an MBA from Harvard Business School and is a graduate of the Broad Residency. Ali lives in New York City with her spouse and two children.
