Amazon awards Los Banos teacher with $30,000 to benefit school

FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — R. M. Miano Elementary in Los Banos is getting a little monetary boost on behave of Amazon.

The 2023 Amazon Future Engineer Teacher of the Year selected 10 recipients from across the country.

Sergio de Alba, a sixth-grade, general education teacher was selected and received a surprise package valued at $30,000.

Of that money, $25,000 will be going to develop a computer science and robotics education program that links back to the agricultural industry. The remaining $5,000 will go toward Mr. Alba.

I am humbled to receive this prestigious award and look forward to improving my computer science program at our school.

"Recipients were chosen based on a variety of criteria, including their commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within computer science education, a recommendation from a school administrator and compelling, personal anecdotes about their school and students," said Amazon in a press release.
