Boston, MA — Dr. Celine Coggins, Founder and CEO of Teach Plus, today announced that former Representative George Miller has joined the organization’s Board of Directors. As a Board member, Representative Miller, a Democrat who stepped down from Congress in 2014 after four decades of service, will provide strategic advising of Teach Plus’ policy work.
“Throughout his career, George has been a leading Democratic voice on education and one of the greatest champions of kids in the history of Congress. He is second to none when it comes to his experience, passion and commitment to helping all kids succeed,” said Dr. Coggins. “We are thrilled and proud to have him on our Board and be able to tap into his policy expertise.”
One of the top Democratic legislators of his generation, Representative Miller, a native Californian, was first elected to Congress in 1974 at the age of 29. From 2007 to 2011, he served as the chair of the House Committee on Education and Labor. In 2009, he worked closely with the incoming Obama Administration to write and secure passage of the Race to the Top and Investing in Innovation provisions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. In 2001, he joined with a bipartisan group of lawmakers to write the No Child Left Behind Act, which required schools for the first time to publicly report the academic performance of subgroups of students and to set goals and take actions towards improvement.
