Monique Barrett

Monique Barrett is a 2025-2026 Teach Plus California Policy Fellow. She is a veteran special education teacher and K-8 multiple subject educator in San Diego, who has taught early childhood to high school. Previously, she was co-chair of the Madison Equity Team, high school math co-teacher, RISE Urban Principal Preparation participant, and elected Board Director of the San Diego Education Association. Monique was a California Education Policy Fellow (2022–2023); appointed as Johnson Fellow for Anti-Ableist Teaching at the University of San Diego (2025); and is pursuing National Board Certification through the California Black Educators Initiative (2025-2026). Monique is San Diego Education Association Vice President and California Teachers Association State Council Delegate and Member Lobbyist. She is also a San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council Delegate. Monique earned a BA in speech communications from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and MA in special education from Azusa Pacific University.
