Brenda Young is a Teach Plus California and a Teach Plus Los Angeles Teaching Policy Fellow. Brenda teaches English and theater at Los Angeles’ John R. Wooden High School, an alternate pathway education center for at-risk teens. She is the school’s spoken word coach for LA’s Classic Poetry Slam, a sponsor for Girls Build LA, and serves as EL Designee and Testing Coordinator. Brenda is a National Board Certified Teacher in career/technical, has been awarded Teacher of the Year for District XI California Continuation High Schools, and was named a Top Ten Educator by the Southern California League of High Schools. She was published as a contributor for “Get Lit,” a curriculum for teaching spoken word, and co-authored the “Young Worker Rights” curriculum especially designed for continuation schools to educate teens about worker health, safety, and rights. Brenda graduated from Utah State University with a BA in English/Speech/Theatre.
