Chelsea Easter teaches 7th and 8th grade English at Indianapolis Lighthouse Charter School at the South Campus, where she also serves as the Head of the Humanities Department. Chelsea’s goal is to create an environment of high expectations for all students and teachers where people are pushed to be their best every day. She previously worked at Arlington High School, a turn-around school operated by the Tindley Schools. Because of her experience as a student in a failing school, she is committed to serving students who have traditionally been failed by the public school system. She has served as Arlington’s Teacher of the Year for the 2013-14 school year, and has published a monograph on using African American vernacular in the classroom a part of the National Association of African American Studies. Chelsea holds a BA in English from Adrian College, an MA in African American literature from Loyola University of Chicago, and a Master’s in Teaching from Marian University. She is currently completing the Urban Principal Program at Indiana University-Purdue University of Indianapolis.
