Stephanie Gates is a 2022-2023 Teach Plus Illinois Affinity Group Facilitator and is the 7th and 8th grade Social Studies and Civics teacher at Lionel Hampton Fine and Performing Arts School in Chicago. She focuses on teaching children how to develop agency in their learning and how to advocate for themselves and others. Stephanie was a member of both the Transformative Teaching Cohort II and the Democratic Classroom Professional Learning Community. She is also a chairperson for the Southside Giving Circle, a philanthropic group that funds organizations designed to support and uplift Black women and girls on the south side of Chicago and the south suburbs. She earned her BA in journalism from Roosevelt University, her MAT in teaching from Columbia College and her MS in Written Communication from National Louis University.
