Kathy Powers is a 2023-2024 Teach Plus Arkansas Policy Fellow. Kathy teaches reading and language arts to fifth-grade students at Carl Stuart Middle School in Conway, Arkansas. She focuses on motivating children to use strategies to read critically and build comprehension in content-area nonfiction, fiction, and digital literacy formats. She was named the Arkansas Teacher of the Year, and the following year she was selected as one of 35 teachers from across the nation to travel to China as a National Teacher of Excellence. She was later named an America Achieves Fellow and traveled the country promoting sound education policy. Kathy began her career teaching first graders in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She has earned her National Board Certification in Literacy. Kathy earned her BS degree in sociology and elementary education from the University of North Carolina, and her MS in reading education from the University of Central Arkansas.
