Dr. Kristal Shelvin is a 2024-2025 Teach Plus Illinois Affinity Group Facilitator and the Executive Director of Student Support for McLean Unit 5 School District in McLean County, Illinois. She leads the District Equity Leadership Team in implementing the Equity Action Plan across five strands/targeted areas. She also supervises the district departments that provide students with specialized services including special education, multilingual services, and MTSS. Previously, Kristal served as the Clinical Services Supervisor at Livingston County Special Services Unit. She received the Normal Human Relations Commission Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Award, YWCA WINGS Award, and the IL General Assembly Diversify Higher Education Faculty in Illinois Fellowship. Kristal’s past experiences in child welfare, special education, and mental health help her work collaboratively across systems. She is also a licensed clinical psychologist. She earned a BS in psychology with a minor in African American studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, an MEd in educational leadership, and a PhD in school psychology both from Illinois State University.
