Jorden Sobonya is a 7th and 8th grade Newcomer teacher at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Madera, California. She has developed engaging curriculum, lessons, and assessments that best fit emergent bilingual students’ needs in the MUSD Newcomer Academy. She previously was a North American Language and Culture Assistant for the Ministerio de Educación y Formación Profesional at a school in Madrid, Spain. Jorden was named Thomas Jefferson’s Teacher of the Year (2019-2020). Jorden found her passion for teaching at a young age when she taught swimming lessons, which developed into a successful business called Jorden Sobonya’s Swim School. Jorden is a credentialed teacher and also on the advisory committee for the California Newcomer Network. She earned her BA in Spanish and Latin American Studies from California State University Chico, and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and MEd in Teaching and Learning in a Global Society from National University.
