Karen Sparks is a 2023-24 Teach Plus Texas 2nd Year Policy Fellow. Karen is an educator in Katy ISD and a professional speaker. Karen is passionate about empowering students for success. She taught English IV, ESL, and credit recovery at Tompkins High School, and strategic reading at Morton Ranch High School in Katy ISD. Karen was Teacher of the Year for Morton Ranch High School in 2014. She was also named the Houston Area Alliance of Black School Educators Teacher of the Year for 2016. Karen was featured in the Katy Magazine December/January 2015-2016 issue as a life changing educator and Katy Magazine’s Top 10 People of 2016. Karen received her BA in Social Work with a minor in Sociology at Grove City College in Grove City, PA and her Masters in Educational Leadership at Lamar University.
