Shamira Underwood is a 2022-2023 Teach Plus Pennsylvania Equity Leadership Institute member who teaches 2nd and 3rd grade mathematics at Pittsburgh Lincoln Elementary. She is committed to practicing, researching, and promoting culturally relevant pedagogy to enhance the positive growth and development of all children. Shamira began her teaching career as an early childhood teacher and also served as a curriculum co-writer. She has worked with various grade levels, served as a liaison for Culturally Relevant Arts Education (CRAE), and worked as an Instructional Teacher Leader/Mathematics Coach. Shamira is a Yale National Initiative fellow and the Restorative Practice point person for her building. Shamira was awarded the Annual Champion Award by the Pittsburgh Local Task Force (2021), the Celebrating Women Award (2018), and was nominated for Teacher of Excellence (2008). She earned her BS in Early Childhood Development from Clarion University and MEd in Curriculum and Instruction from Gannon University.
