Teach Plus Applauds the Passage of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 and the Advocacy of Senator Lujan (D-NM) & Representative Gallego (D-AZ-03) in Supporting Funding to Achieve the Goals of their Teachers LEAD Act

January 5, 2023—Teach Plus today issued the following statement on the passage of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, which includes specific investments in teachers and teacher leadership on behalf of students.

“Teach Plus and Teach Plus teacher leaders congratulate Senator Lujan (D-NM) and Representative Gallego (D-AZ-03) for securing $2.75 million to support the goals of their Teachers LEAD (Leading, Educating, Advancing, and Designing) Act for a Native American teacher leadership and retention initiative in the U.S. Department of Education. The Teachers LEAD Act was conceived and designed with the support of Teach Plus and Teach Plus teacher leaders, including Kristen Rhodes Beland (RI). The Teachers LEAD Act is the first piece of legislation to create a framework for teacher leadership.

“If we honor the voice of educators and provide a space for their leadership, we will see an immediate shift from requiring the need to recruit and retain teachers to a valued, passionate workforce for generations to come,“ said Kristen Rhodes Beland, Teach Plus Rhode Island Policy Fellowship alumna.

Teach Plus is grateful to Senator Lujan and Representative Gallego for prioritizing teachers and teacher leadership as a form of teacher retention across the nation.”
