Chaitra McCarty is a Teach Commonwealth Teaching Policy Senior Fellow. Chaitra teaches 3rd grade in an English Language Learners (ELL) classroom at Hyannis West Elementary in Hyannis, Massachusetts. She is a curriculum writer for the Barnstable Public Schools for both math and English language arts and is a site coordinator for the federally-funded 21st Century Community Learning Centers. Chaitra pioneered a new reading program designed specifically for ELLs and is working closely with the district to analyze its effectiveness in a class with 100 percent ELL students and with curriculum leads to determine best implementation of this program. Chaitra earned a BA in Human Development with a concentration in Elementary Education from Wheelock College and a MEd in Curriculum and Instruction from UMASS Lowell.
