Desiree Smith became a teacher through Teach for America. In her role as lead mathematics instructor at Center City Public Charter Schools, Desiree implements and writes Common Core-aligned curriculum for 6th-8th grades, and creates professional development for the primary and elementary math teachers. She is passionate about building conceptual knowledge and challenging students through performance-based assessments. Desiree founded the Congress Heights Debate Team and operates an after-school tutoring program in collaboration with volunteers from Georgetown University. Most recently, she was selected as a 2014-2015 corps member of the New Leaders’ Emerging Leader’s Project. Desiree graduated from the University of Virginia with a BA in Political & Social Thought and African-American studies, and an MA in public policy from University of Virginia’s Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy.
