Isra Elshafei is a 2024-2025 Teach Plus Pennsylvania Policy Fellow. She is a math and computer science teacher at Vaux Big Picture High School in Philadelphia, focusing on transforming the perspective of mathematics and mathematical literacy for her students in order to develop their confidence. Isra also supports other teachers in cultivating a supportive culture in their classrooms. She began teaching in Detroit in 2021, where she developed a robotics curriculum that combined the realm of social justice and technology. Isra is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., an active coach in Students Run Philly Style, Union Representative, and Teach for America corps member. She earned her BA in secondary education and education for empowerment from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and is currently a Dean’s Scholar pursuing an MEd in urban education from the University of Pennsylvania.
