Alex Gutierrez is a 2024-2025 Teach Plus California Emergent Bilingual Change Agent. He is a newcomer Additional Language Development (ALD) teacher and the Emerging Multilingual Learner (EML) site lead at San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara, California. Alex’s role primarily involves family outreach, academic language development toward reclassification, and support for newly arrived EML students and their teachers in content classes, including math, science, and history. Before teaching, he worked at Santa Barbara Unified School District for four years as a bilingual instructional aid. Alex is a recipient of the Dorman L. Commons Fellowship (2022-2023) and University of California (UC) President’s Educator Fellowship (2022-2023). Alex received his BA in sociology and his MEd, teaching credential, and bilingual authorization from UC Santa Barbara.
