Lisa Thyer is a 2021-2022 Teach Plus Illinois Senior Policy Fellow who teaches English at Amos Alonzo Stagg High School in Palos Hills. Among the classes she teaches is a co-taught, oral history-based class that she and her colleague created in partnership with the nonprofit organization Voice of Witness. Since its creation, her students have published three books. Lisa coaches Girls’ Cross Country and serves as a Teachers’ Association Representative. She was honored as a 2016 Golden Apple Teacher of Distinction and was a 2020 IEA Region 30 Leadership Award Recipient. As a Teach Plus Policy Fellow, Lisa worked with other Fellows and a state coalition to propose a system to strengthen Social Emotional Learning practices in schools statewide in response to COVID-19. Lisa holds a BA in English Secondary Education from the University of Illinois and earned her MA with distinction in English Literature from DePaul University.
