Suzanne Shaffer is a 2024-2025 Teach Plus Pennsylvania Policy Fellow. She is an elementary reading specialist for grades K-4 and Title I Parent and Family Engagement coordinator at McNichols Plaza Elementary School in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Suzanne focuses on bringing current science of reading research to her students and colleagues. She runs an after-school literacy program that she established with community partners in 2014. Suzanne began her teaching career in 1991 as a volunteer, where she taught 2nd grade in North Carolina. She has taught special education in grades K-5, before transitioning to her reading position in 2011. She was the Scranton Times Northeast Woman (2022), in recognition of her work in children’s literacy, and is a member of the Kappa Gamma Pi education honor society. Suzanne earned a dual certification in elementary and special education and master’s degree as a reading specialist, both from Marywood University.
