Teach Plus Applauds Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court for Overturning Common Core Ballot Question

BOSTON, MA—Teach Plus applauds the unanimous ruling of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) today to overturn a proposed November ballot initiative to throw out the Massachusetts education standards.  In providing testimony for the plaintiffs to the SJC, Teach Plus Teaching Policy Fellowship alumna Kalimah Rahim said: “The Massachusetts Frameworks emphasize using higher order thinking skills and encourage ingenuity in solving real-world problems. I believe the standards better prepare our kids for the demands of college and career that awaits them.”

Teach Plus teachers have taken an active role in helping ensure the success of the standards by providing testimony to the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, writing op-eds, and training over a thousand of their peers across the state on the use of the standards. “Massachusetts educators have spent five years implementing rigorous, college-and-career-ready standards. The SJC decision will ensure that Massachusetts can preserve the standards and continue the progress they have made,” said Celine Coggins, Teach Plus Founder and CEO.
