Joanna Khatavkar is a 2019-20 Teach Plus Colorado Policy Fellow. Joanna is a special education co-teacher in a 3rd grade inclusive classroom at Jessie Whaley Maxwell Elementary in Denver Public Schools. She is one of her school’s co-representatives of the Denver Classroom Teachers Association. Within DPS, Joanna has been a special educator in both elementary and middle school settings and a mentor teacher for two special education teacher residents. Before teaching, Joanna was a radio promotions coordinator in then changed career paths to teach English as a Second Language in Japan and South Korea. She received a BA in Speech Communication from Colorado State University and an MA in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Urban Education from the Denver Teacher Residency program.
