Jana Hughey is a 2021-2022 Teach Plus Texas Policy Fellow who teaches 4th-grade math, science, and coaches other teachers in the delivery of mathematics at Roy Roberts Elementary School in Lubbock, Texas. Jana is a Designated Master Teacher who also serves as the Mathematics Campus Academic Leader for her campus and was previously named teacher of the year for her campus. Jana has reviewed for SAFAL partners and edited textbooks for HMH. Jana holds certifications for Early Childhood Education, Elementary Self-Contained, and ESL. She graduated from Texas Tech University with a BS in Family Studies with an Early Childhood Endorsement.
Carey Humphrey is a 2021-2022 Teach Plus Texas Policy Fellow who teaches 9-12 grade Principles of Education and Training, Instructional Practices in Education and Training, and Practicum in Education and Training at Grand Prairie High School in Grand Prairie, Texas. Carey runs a dual-credit program for the Education and Training students at UTA, sponsors the Texas Association of Future Educators club, and is a member of the district’s CTE New Teacher Mentor program where she mentors and presents teaching strategies and methods to new teachers. Carey has been named teacher of the year twice, received an Outstanding Teacher Award, and was selected as a TEKS reviewer. She graduated from Texas Woman’s University in Denton with a BS in Home Economics and received her MEd in Education from Concordia University at Austin.
Brandi Jackson is a 2021-2022 Teach Plus Texas Policy Fellow who provides gifted services at Arapaho Classical Magnet School in Richardson, Texas. Brandi is in her 14th year of teaching, and previously served as a mentor teacher, cadre leader, instructional rounds team member, and math specialist. Outside of the classroom, Brandi engages the community in equity work as a member of the RISD Racial Equity Committee, Civic Voices of Richardson, and more. Brandi earned a BS in Business Administration from The University of Memphis, and an MBA from Dallas Baptist University.
Angie Jackson is a 2021-2022 Teach Plus Texas Policy Fellow and is a 3rd grade, self-contained teacher at Cleckler-Heald Elementary in Weslaco, Texas. She is the bilingual chairperson for her campus and the UIL chess coach. Angie previously taught a 2nd grade self-contained class and served as grade level chair. She is featured in a published Texas Lesson Study. She graduated from the University of Texas Pan-American in Edinburg with a BA in sociology and received her MEd in teaching from Grand Canyon University.
Joe Jenkins is a 2021-2022 Teach Plus Texas Policy Fellow who teaches 11th grade Physics and Robotics at New Tech High School in Dallas. Joe was his campus’ teacher of the year and he also serves as Department Chair and a member of the Campus Instructional Leadership Team and previously taught Physics and Astronomy. Joe is a Teach for America alumnus and is a veteran of the United State Marine Corps. Joe graduated from University of Texas at Dallas with a BA in political science and an MPA from the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Michael D. Johnican is a 2021-2022 Teach Plus Texas Houston ISD Policy Fellow who teaches 8th grade Science and Advanced Science at Revere Middle School in Houston. Michael is the chair of the Science department, works as a mentor in the HISD Mentoring program for new teachers, and serves on the Educational Improvement Council with Alief ISD. Michael graduated from Texas Southern University with a BS in Biology and received his PhD in Environmental Toxicology.
Greg Kabay is a 2021-2022 Teach Plus Texas Houston ISD Policy Fellow who teaches 5th grade Reading and Social Studies at Parker Elementary School in Houston. Greg sponsors the campus Student Council and Journalism club. He is also an HISD MINT Lead Teacher and former Teacher of the Year. He graduated with a BA in History with honors from the University of Houston.
Chandler Keen is a 2021-2022 Teach Plus Texas Policy Fellow who teaches high school Theatre at KIPP University Prep in San Antonio. Chandler is her campus’ 10th grade Assistant Grade Team Leader and is responsible for directing, producing, and designing all main stage theatrical productions. Prior to teaching, Chandler worked in the nonprofit sector in positions at Girls Inc. of Memphis and the Posse Foundation in New Orleans. Chandler graduated from Loyola University New Orleans with a BA in Theatre Arts and Musical Theatre.
Louis King is a 2021-2022 Teach Plus Texas Houston ISD Policy Fellow who teaches 9th-12th grade JROTC at G.C. Scarborough High School in Houston. He is a Department Chair, HISD Classroom Culture Specialist, Teacher Mentor, Coach for JROTC Marksmanship, Color Guard, Robotics, Fitness, Leadership, and Academic Teams. Louis was recognized as a Top Exemplar Teacher Leader for HISD for the 2020-2021 School Year. Louis is a distinguished U.S. Army veteran who served his country for over 20 years. He graduated from Alcorn State University with a BA in Economics and received his MS in Information Technology Management from Touro International University.
Traci Latson is a 2021-2022 Teach Plus Texas Houston ISD Policy Fellow who teaches 7th and 8th-grade Career and Technology Education at Meyerland Performing of Visual Arts Middle School in Houston, Texas. She is the CTE department chair and Bridge Camp Coordinator, and member of the SDMC and FAC. She’s served in various district leadership roles, including chair of the District Advisory Committee, District of Innovation Committee, and District Calendar Committee. Traci serves as Vice President of the Houston Federation of Teachers union and AFL-CIO delegate. Traci earned her BS in Microbiology from Southern University and A&M College and holds an MEd in Curriculum and Instruction in Technology from Our Lady of the Lake University.
